Is VIN Check legit? ›

While VINCheck is a useful free tool, it is not a comprehensive vehicle history report and should not be relied upon when purchasing a vehicle.

This inspection can be made by a Colorado licensed auto dealer, a Colorado licensed inspection station (i.e. Air Care Colorado), or a Colorado law enforcement officer. The inspection is annotated on Form DR 2698 Verification of Vehicle Identification Number.

A VIN Verification is a physical inspection of the vehicle to verify that the VIN on the vehicle matches the registration or title document. This inspection can be made by a Colorado auto dealer, a Colorado license inspection station (emissions), or a Colorado Law Enforcement Officer.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau offers a free VIN check to determine whether a vehicle was ever reported stolen or damaged to the point where it was issued a salvage title. NICB offers up to five free VIN checks from one IP address within a 24-hour period, using data supplied by car insurance companies.

Visit the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) website, vehiclehistory.gov, to get a vehicle history report with title, insurance loss, and salvage information.

1983 and newer vehicles: An emissions test is required every two years for vehicles more than seven model years old. Your vehicle registration renewal postcard will state whether or not a test is required, or if your vehicle has qualified for the roadside emissions test. The fee is $25.

Colorado currently does not require emissions testing for vehicles from the model years of 2017 through 2022. Vehicles of the model year 2016 require emissions testing if there is any transfer of ownership. Additionally, all-electric vehicles and street rods are exempt from emissions testing in Colorado.

Can You Trust CARFAX and Autocheck? Both CARFAX and Autocheck reports can be a good starting point but should not be the only argument to make a decision. The main weakness of these reports is that mileage and maintenance are recorded only when the owner contacts official service centers.

Because VIN data is not public record, providing your car's VIN to a potential buyer, whether online or in person, is completely safe. A VIN number can only be used to obtain general information about the service records and history of your vehicle. After all, anyone can approach your car and read its VIN.
