What is Corruption in Conan Exiles? - Basically Average (2024)

It’s extremely important to know all the mechanics in video games, especially if you’re someone who isn’t always well-versed in a variety of games. Why do I say that? Well, often times video games will have a good amount of crossover with terms that they use and status effects that they use, Corruption.

Now, though sometimes games use the same terms there can be differences between them and the impact they have on a player. So, for example, I would safely assume that Corruption is something that will negatively affect my character’s stats, but depending on the game Corruption would either deplete on its own or you would need a Potion or some sort of spell to remove it.

I must admit, while I could visibly see what the effects of Corruption were on my character I wasn’t sure how to remove it or whether my character would be stuck with it forever. Admittedly, the chances of you having a status effect that is permanent are extraordinarily rare, you just never know with a game like Conan Exiles and quite frankly as I covered in my Attributes guide there is a bit of truth to this hypothesis.

So, since Corruption is a bigger topic than you would think it is, I thought I would cover it in depth for you so you know everything about what you’re playing with and don’t get blindsided.

WHAT IS CORRUPTION IN CONAN EXILES?

Corruption is a status effect that can be placed on a player when visiting specific locations in Conan Exiles. Though in most cases players can remove this status effect, there are some ways where this becomes a permanent alteration to the player and may actually positively impact the player.

Luckily for players, they will always be notified when they are becoming Corrupted and it is a relatively slow process before a player is completely corrupted.

There are actually 3 types of Corruption in the game, all working in their own ways. These types include:

Normal Corruption, which is gained from entering Corrupted areas and causing the player to simply lose maximum Health and Stamina up to 50% at the Heaviest Corruption.

Permanent Corruption, which is chosen by the player in order to change their Attributes and gain a new hidden skill set. I cover this in-depth in my Attributes article, so feel free to check that out if you’re interested.

Tainted Corruption, which is gained by using a Transportory Stone or using the Summon Corpse ritual. This is the most dangerous form of Corruption as it can exceed the normal 50% that players have with Normal and Permanent Corruption and can go up to 99%.

WHERE IS CORRUPTION LOCATED IN CONAN EXILES?

Typically Corruption is found near any of the Obelisks which are used for teleporting or in areas that have extremely high-level mobs and valuables. Players can also find themselves fighting against demons around the World which have a great deal of Corruption and if players are not smart about how they dodge, each hit will cause them to become Corrupted faster and faster.

In my opinion, mobs that have Corruption are the absolute worst to deal with as not only will they decrease your maximum health, but they tend to hit harder than most mobs, leading you to be much more susceptible to death.

In all cases of corruption, players will see a purple notification on the left-hand side of their screen that states they are Gaining Corruption and will need to adjust in the way they see fit.

Players can also locate Cursed items which will cause them to become Corrupted quite quickly and they can also drink Corrupting Brew in order to gain small amounts of Corruption. While you may not think either of these are useful to the player, these come in extremely handy if you’re someone who wants Permanent Corruption for the hidden Attribute Perks.

Even if you’re not at that point yet, I strongly recommend that you make yourself familiar with them so that process is quick and painless.

HOW FAST DOES IT TAKE TO GET CORRUPTED IN CONAN EXILES?

Players gain one stack of Corruption for each 5 seconds they spend getting Corrupted, meaning that they have a good amount of time before they are at max of 50%. Now, this isn’t true when players are against mobs as a pack can take you down extremely fast, especially if you get stunned or staggered.

HOW DO I MANAGE CORRUPTION IN CONAN EXILES?

Managing Corruption is actually fairly simple as long as it’s the Normal kind of Corruption. Obviously with the Permanent Corruption, well… it’s Permanent unless you change your Attributes with a Yellow Lotus Potion or Potion of Bestial Memory and with Tainted Corruption players will simply need to wait it out in order for it to subside.

Now, if you want to get rid of the Normal Corruption you have a few different options with some being more appealing than others based on what circ*mstance you’re currently in.

If you’re heading back to your base and don’t want to waste resources I strongly recommend grabbing an Entertainer Thrall as it will remove all Corruption over a small period of time and heal you. By far, this is the best way to remove Corruption without wasting resources, though this is not always a possibility especially if you are very far from your main base.

Alternatively, players can bring an Entertainer with them as a Follower, though players will want to make sure they have enough HP and will probably want to unlock the Attribute that allows them to have two Followers.

If you’re looking for fast ways to get rid of Corruption you can partake in the following:

Heart of a Hero, which can be eaten to remove all Corruption, however, this has some better uses so I would save it.

Players can also make a Cleansing Brew, which is made with Herbal Tea and Herbal Lotus Blossom in the Stove and Improved Stove and reduces Corruption by 5%. I would strongly recommend that players have a few of these on hand just in case they need them.

Finally, players can wear the Champion’s Leggings which will reduce a player’s Corruption by 1 every 30 seconds. These can be crafted at the Improved Armorer’s Bench and will help reduce the amount of time it takes to build up Corruption but are less useful for removing it unless you’re going on a long journey.
